Neighbor clips woman's plants and tries to dispose of the evidence, even after the woman allowed them to use her property to plant herbs: ‘[She] thinks that our property is hers when it's not’

Another day, another property line dispute. In this story's case, there's a clear victim and an even clearer wrongdoer. You'd think that a hospitable person would be treated with respect, but it seems that kindness is not contagious. In a world where we're told to follow the golden rule, we sure see a lot of the opposite happening around us. The woman in this next story explains that she and her neighbors had an agreement: She allows them to plant their herbs on her property, and they pick from them when needed. Now, it seems the neighbor understood the woman's hospitable allowance to be a free rein offering of everything in her front yard garden…

The neighbors end up clipping all of the woman's plants, then try to dispose of the evidence at the trunk of a tree still on her property. Two things are confusing here: 1. Why clip them, then immediately dispose of them? 2. They couldn't think of a more inconspicuous place to hide the lifeless stems…?

  • This is a crime of passion for gardening. Or, is it simply a way for the neighbor to assert some weird dominance over the woman? A lot about this situation doesn't make sense, but does entitlement ever make sense, really?

    Is it stated that the neighbor asks for favors “a lot," even though the woman never asks them for anything in return. Not only do the neighbors fail to understand “what's mine is not yours,” but they also don't understand property lines. Time for a land survey, perhaps?

  • SuddenFlamingo100 You could go knock on their door and tell them to never step foot on the property again unless they are specifically invited. I don't care what language they speak, they know better than to pull this crap. You could be childish too and start "remodeling" their yard every time they touch your mother's yard. Salting the earth worked in antiquity and it'll work now.

  • StyxtheCat18 I would put up a fence and send them a bill for the plants (perhaps a garden center can help with a bill for what said plants would cost to replace.) and add the cost of labor for caring for the plants if you want and send the letter via registered mail. It's worth a try. Good luck.

  • petesmom57 Depending on how far she is willing to go, she could have a lawyer draw up a cease and desist letter, or call the police and have them trespassed. I would ask in r/legal.

  • BunchessMcGuinty Do it in writing. And take a picture of the letter taped to their door. (had to do that for the courts in an eviction case. Judge took it as they had every chance to recieve the letter even though they tried to claim otherwise)

Once you do that, it'll usually stop.If they're scared of the police, if not, they'll continue until well, you get lawyers involved.
